Please describe what Ortho-Keratology is and give a basic sense of how it works.
Ortho-K is a process that utilizes gas permeable contact lenses worn only while you sleep to correct your vision. The process gently reshapes the cornea (front surface of the eye) at night, and allows for clear vision during the day without glasses or contact lenses. The process is reversible, so no permanent changes are done to the eye.
The Ortho-K lens gently reshapes the cornea (front layer of the eye) at night, and allows for clear vision during the day without glasses or contact lenses.
How does Ortho-K slow the progression of childhood myopia (nearsightedness).
This therapeutic contact lens gently reshapes the cornea while you sleep to temporarily correct nearsightedness. The way that the lens is designed to focus light to the back of the eye has been found to reduce the rate of progression of myopia in children.
Are the effects of Ortho-K instant?
The effects of Ortho-K are not instantaneous. The full effects of the treatment require the patient to sleep in the lenses to gently reshape the cornea while you sleep. Depending on the patient’s starting prescription, the time it takes to achieve the full therapeutic effect varies.
What is it about this particular technology that you find most exciting, or the component that made you feel you need to use in this for your practice?
Giving patients the ability to see clearly without glasses or contact lenses is very exciting part of fitting Ortho-K lenses. I also like to provide children with options to reduce the rate of progression of their near sightedness to potentially avoid serious complications associated with high nearsightedness later in life.
How effective is it? What results can a patient expect from being treated with Ortho-k?
If a patient is determined to be a good candidate for Ortho-K, they should expect clear and comfortable vision throughout the day while being free from glasses and contacts.
Who is a good candidate for Ortho-k? From what age can a patient have Ortho-K?
Patients with mild-moderate amounts of nearsightedness make the best Ortho-K candidates. Ortho-K is FDA approved for both children and adults.
Are there specific patients for whom the use of Ortho-K is particularly helpful or useful? Why?
Young children that are already nearsighted have the greatest benefit of utilizing Ortho-K lenses. They not only get clear vision during the day free of glasses or contacts, but they also get the benefit of reducing the rate of progression that their nearsightedness is increasing at.
Is Ortho-k good for athletes?
Ortho-K is great for athletes. It is most common amongst swimmers that require clear vision but are also not in an environment that is very suitable for glasses or contact lenses while in the pool.
Is Ortho-K safe?
Overnight contact lens wear can be a major health concern if not done properly. Sleeping in soft contact lenses can lead to inflammation and infection of the eye. CRT lenses are FDA approved for overnight wear. The lenses are high oxygen permeability, allowing them to be breathable, even during sleep.
